In the United States, Saran Wrap was the first popular brand. As often happens, everyone began to use the brand name as "the" name. It became "genericized." The American Heritage dictionary includes it with a small "s," and describes it as a "former" trademark. So "saran wrap" is perfectly correct. It is what I would use myself. "Cling film" is common. So is "thin plastic wrap."
