This is a painting by Tarsila do Amaral, a Brazilian artist who lived in the beginning of the 20th century and participated in an important art movement in the country, Modernism. The image represents several individuals together, which resembles a huddle or a pile of humans. The colors and shapes give the idea of plurality within the Brazilian population. The intention seems to be that of a representation of the ethnic blend that constituted the nation. On the background, it is possible to see factories. They bring the idea of industrialization, a process that marked the state of Sao Paulo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The painting is called Os Operários (The Workers).
