I met up with a strange accident. Why it used "up"?

to meet with = to meet up with
They both mean the same.

Sometimes "meet up" means the meeting was planned or intentional. But this cannot be the meaning here because we are talking of an accident. "Up" is used here to group the subject "I" with the object "accident." The subject is not just an observer, but a participant in the accident.
