"read between the lines" implies a message which isn't made explicit. this requires a sensitive feeling and good analytical skill, I suppose. In most cases, you don't have to interpret things literally.
okay, based in our culture: for instance you're such a lazy guy and in everyday life, you do nothing but to lay down on the sofa and watch tv programs. now, If I say: "I just prepared a meal. I don't want to disturb you, you might miss out your favorite tv shows. keep lying and take your meal while watching... go on."
If you only knew how to read between the lines, you might interpret that I'm kinda upset and insulting him.
