French accents and e muet question
I've encountered the rule on writing accents:
A vowel, if not at the end of a word, gets accent if situated in the end of a syllable
Examples:
épître é-pî-tre
pénétrer pé-né-trer
été é-té
célèbre cé-lè-bre
But also there are the same cases (end of a syllable) where accent is not set and 'e muet' is pronounced
Examples:
secret se-cret
petit pe-tit
fenêtre fe-nê-tre
samedi sa-me-di
leçon le-çon
What is the rule that governs accent writing for e and e muet?

@EternalRose
Do you mean given an arbitrary word it is not possible to figure out where to put the accent?

I'm sorry I can't help you with that. I never hear rules of e muet. I think it's just a matter of pronunciation

I do not agree. There should be some rules on French accents e.g. Thimonnier
It is not possible to memorize all words

French is different language has some exception in writing but that doesn't mean,it's hard language, just you should memorize the words like that with mute (e) or with accents, because in French we use accents for (a,e,i),so the important which you should know it,it's the pronunciation of those accents with(i,e,a) some of them has a same pronunciation, but you can search it in dictionary and check it in notebook,to remember it well, the rule of this accents just to make meaning to the words or to be easier in pronunciation
that's all
good luck
