difference between 美 and 漂亮 If I want to say someone is pretty or beautiful, do I have to use 漂亮 rather than 美? Is it impolite if I use 美? xie xie

Generally speaking, I think most people would agree that the adjectives "beautiful" and "pretty" differ in degree. It is not impolite to call someone beautiful. Just be aware, in any language, when complimenting women, you are entering a minefield. (Sorry, sometimes I forget which forum I am in.)

they both mean beautiful. you can use anyone of them to judge someone pretty. you can say: 她真美。 or 她真漂亮。they have the same meaning. but we say: 她是一个漂亮的姑娘。but we don't say 她是一个美的姑娘。 and we say: 她是一个美女。but we don't say 她是一个漂亮女。 if the noun is a word with two charactors, we use the adj. which also has two charactors. eg:漂亮的小孩儿。 if the noun is a word with one charactor, we use the adj. with one charactor. eg: 美人。
