Would someone explain a sentence in the essay of "why we read..." by katha pollitt? Thank you!
“And that reading is being made to bear such an inappropriater and simplistic burden speaks to the poverty both of culture and of frank political discussion in our time.” I don't understand the usage of "speaks"especially. Which word does it modify?

You can rewrite the sentence like this:
“And that reading is being made to bear such an inappropriate and simplistic burden that makes a statement/conveys a message about the poverty both of culture and of frank political discussion in our time.”

The verb in the sentence is "speaks".
