Hi Cathrin, A melting pot is used to cook many different kids of food into one meal. In 1908, there was a play (theatre) about immigrants coming to America called The Melting Pot. The idea is that all of the countries of Europe turned into one meal in this country. New York has people from all over the world. You can experience Chinese, Ukranian, Italian, Puerto Rican, and Moroccan culture at one time. Because of this, it is like a melting pot. I hope this helps. Let me know if you are looking for lessons:-) Eric

Throughout the 19th Century, New York was the place where immigrants from everywhere would enter the USA. Many of them stayed in New York...so many nationalities mixed together in that city - Germans, Russians, Irish, Italians, Greeks, Armenians, Georgians, Lebanese, etc, etc - and they all became Americans in the Melting Pot which is New York. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HHT_V294Co

A melting pot is a place where people of different countries, cultures, styles, beliefs, etc are all mixed together. USA as a whole is called a "melting pot" but especially New York because of it's huge population.

It's simply one of the biggest cities on the east coast of the US where many people from other countries in Asia and Europe immigrate to, thus a diverse population.
