Sorry – kanagatyi – කණගාටුයි
Really – bohoma - බොහොම
I - mama - මම
For me – mata – මට
So theoretically, it should be
I’m really sorry – mata bohoma kanagatuyi – මට බොහොම කණගාටුයි
But hold on.... Life is not that sweet... ^_^.
In Sinhala, while speaking one doesn't say “I’m really sorry”
You can use this sentence “I’m really sorry” - “mata bohoma kanagatuyi” in a situation where if you want to express your sympathy towards someone … As in – Im really sorry (for You).
In Sinhala when one wants to say sorry for a mistake one has done ,
What they say is “I request your pardon”
When we translate it to English back word by word it becomes “As for me, be forgiving”
So
As for me – mata – මට
Pardon – sama – සමා
Be - venna – වෙන්න
So the correct way to ask for forgiveness/saying sorry is:
I request your pardon - Mata sama venna - මට සමා වෙන්න
mata - මට - can me omitted as in Japanese "vathashi" and life becomes very sweet indeed.
Just use "sama venna" in any situation when you want to say sorry.
^_^
