What does "sooner rather than later" mean?

The action is preferred to happen without too much delay. It is a less formal and more socially polite way of saying 'as soon as possible'. An example: "when would you like to go for dinner?" "sooner rather than later".

It expresses a wish that something happen soon as opposed to another choice of happening later. "When should we start?" "Sooner rather than later." - We should not delay.
