The word "get" is a linking verb. A linking verb connects nouns and pronouns to other information in the Sentence.
He always gets dirty when he washes the car.
Are you going to get the food for the party?
She gets to go on a vacation next month.

Probably the subject of uses of the word "get" could fill an entire book. It's an extremely versatile word, especially in colloquial usage. For some reason, it grates me to see the word in written form when I consider many more literary alternatives are available. Therefore I challenge you to get by without using it altogether.
