the difference between umpire and referee
Can anybody answer that for me?

I don't think there's a difference aside from an umpire is what you exclusively call a referee in baseball.
umpire = referee = official

They basically mean the same thing (in this context) but it just depends on the sport as to which one will be used...for example football has a referee and umpire in Tennis

umpire is for baseball.
referee is for all other sports.
