How to say "a friend" in German?
is "mein Freund or meine Freundin" always boyfriend/girlfriend in German?
Do you have to say einen Freund/Freundin for a platonic friendship???

from what i have heard, usually if you use "mein Freund/meine Freundin", it is taken as not platonic. to be sure you can say "ein Freund von mir/ eine Freundin von mir" (a friend of mine)... when you talk about a platonic friend.

It has both meanings:
Freund/Freundin: boyfriend/girlfriend
but also Freund/Freundin: friend (just friendship)
I try to understand what kind of relationship it refers to from the context.
For example, if someone says: "Ich habe viele Deutsche Freunde" it should be clear that it means: "I have many German friends" (just friendship).
If a girl told me: "Ich wohne mit meinem Freund" I would suppose that she speaks about her boyfriend.
Best regards,
Cristina

This one is a bit tricky. It really depends on the situation. To avoid any misunderstanding you can use another word:
Der Bekannte
Die Bekannte.
Der ist Bekannter von mir.
Die ist Bekannte von mir.
Ich gehe nach Belin, um einen Bekannten zu besuchen.
