from what i have heard, usually if you use "mein Freund/meine Freundin", it is taken as not platonic. to be sure you can say "ein Freund von mir/ eine Freundin von mir" (a friend of mine)... when you talk about a platonic friend.

It has both meanings: Freund/Freundin: boyfriend/girlfriend but also Freund/Freundin: friend (just friendship) I try to understand what kind of relationship it refers to from the context. For example, if someone says: "Ich habe viele Deutsche Freunde" it should be clear that it means: "I have many German friends" (just friendship). This one is a bit tricky. It really depends on the situation. To avoid any misunderstanding you can use another word: Der Bekannte Die Bekannte. Der ist Bekannter von mir. Die ist Bekannte von mir. Ich gehe nach Belin, um einen Bekannten zu besuchen. Usw.

Ich sage 'einer Freund / eine Freundin von mir'.
