Reverence is much more intense. A religious person might show reverence to a Bible or Quran. A person considered holy or very greatly admired might inspire reverence.
Deference means more to take special consideration for something or someone. It does not necessarily have anything to do with awe or intense feeling.
Students show deference to their teacher
Citizens show deference to the law.
Soldiers show deference to people of higher rank.
