Facevo ( tempo imperfetto) indica un'azione svolta nel passato, generalmente abituale.
Es: Quando andavo al liceo facevo i compiti di notte.
Stavo facendo (imperfetto+ gerundio) indica un'azione svolta in passato e protratta nel tempo, generalmente interrotta da un'altra.
Es: Stavo facendo i compiti quando mi chiamò Laura.
