What is the meaning of "hubbub" actually?

Hubbub = A situation in which there is much noise, confusion, excitement, and activity ,especially caused by a lot of people all talking at the same time
Ex- I could hardly hear myself speak above all the hubbub in the theatre bar

I agree with Ravi - ''hubbub'' is onomatopoeic (=it means what it sounds like). So I imagine a noisy crowd.
