A 'passage' is a portion of an essay or an article. An article is shorter, written about a specific event/ topic. An essay is longer, and often makes an argument about one or more broad topics and ends with a conclusion. Most writings from magazines are 'articles" ("How to Grow Your Muscles") An essay you would write for school. It could be "Muscles in Pop Culture."
