гопники: Russia's hidden cultural treasure.
Though I've read very little on the subject of gopniki, I'm fascinated by them and wish to know more.
What is the current status of gopniki in Russia? Why do gopniks like to squat instead of sitting down? Are there more gopniki now than there were 5 years ago?
I would appreciate any expert opinions on this great cultural phenomenon.

I think you have been misled. Gopniki are not a cultural treause. Not even a treause at all! Though I would be quite happy if they were hidden as deep as possible.
They are the people with no moral restrictions who can easily kill or hurt anybody and they wont even regret of it.
