In mandarin, both forget and forgot mean忘记(wàng jì).This word do not have past tense.

I think both 忘记&忘了can refer to forget/forgot.
if you 忘记/忘了do something, you just lost your memory to finish a thing which should be done.
ie: 我忘记了登陆密码。
我忘了这首歌的名字。

忘记、忘了、忘掉
忘记:这是一个动词,后面一半会加忘记的东西,比如说“忘记喝水”、“忘记护照”
忘了:这一半作为短语在用。一般出现在“A:你带钱包了吗? B:没,忘了。”
忘掉:这也是一个动词,和忘记有点类似,可以互换。唯一微小的差别在于,忘掉可能目的性更强,例如“我要忘掉这件可怕的事情!”
