In Portugal: Como estás? For a friend. For someone you barely know or for showing more respect: Como está?

"Como vai você?" is the way you learn from books or Portuguese course, it is correct and more formal. But usually in Brazil when u want to say "Hi, how are you?" u can be less formal by saying "Oi, tudo bem?"
