Expressing condolences in German
In English, when someone dies, we say they "passed away" because it's less harsh then saying they died. What is the appropriate way to say that someone died in German? As in: I'm so sorry to hear that your mother has passed away.
Also, what are some condolences that I can offer a good friend who has lost his mother?

I recommend this website:
http://www.trauerspruch.de/einleitung (introduction)
You'll find more on the right side.
You could write us which one you've chosen for your friend.
We say "ist von uns gegangen" ("is gone from us"), "ist ein geschlafen" ("has fallen asleep"), "hat uns für immer verlassen" ("has left us forever").

Hier ist was ich geschrieben habe:
Unsere Liebe Freunde,
Wir sind sehr traurig über den plötzlichen Tod deiner Mutter. Es ist so schmerzlich einen geliebten Menschen viel zu früh zu verlieren. Sie sind in unseren Gebeten.
Aufrichtige Anteilnahme,
Bryan and Susan
Thank you, NIna, so much for the website and for the valuable information.
