Meaning of 'Je suis du midi'
At the moment I am reading Germinal in English and French.
The French says:
Je suis du midi
The English translation is:
I am from the south
However midi means afternoon. So how does it translate as I am from the south?

"Le Midi" (capital "M") is the southern half of France. It is called that way because at noon ("midi", lower-case "m") the sun is toward the south.
