The difference of upcoming and coming, such as the winter is upcoming/ coming.

Upcoming = Adjective ( An upcoming event )
Coming = Gerund / Present Continuous ( The people are coming now )

I hate that winter is coming. (Fine)
I will hate the upcoming winter. but some might also say:
I will hate the coming winter.
All are fine. "Upcoming" is not often used.
Never: The winter is upcoming.
