This is one example of how the meanings of individual characters make remembering words in Chinese easier. Unfortunately in English, remembering words is probably more difficult. The responses I read are full of good advice. I try to use all the new words I'm learning in sentences. The simpler the better.

Ellen:
The Effective way to memorize vocabulary is to continually study one subject.
For example, you might begin your vocabulary studies by studing Science, or Romance, or Philosophy, or Art, or History.
If you try to study vocabulary in all possible contexts, you will have no basis for memory.
