What is allegory? Can we regard tales like Red Riding Hood or Jack the Giant killer as allegories?

Allegory is a story with a hidden meaning or lesson. I don't know if those two have a very hidden meaning. They are childrens stories, without a strong message underneath. An allegory might be 'the hare and the tortoise' where two animals have a race. The message is not well hidden, but it is a moral lesson. Most of Aesop's Fables are like this.

Usually, when speaking of allegory it's a story a religious leader might tell to imply a moral or spiritual message. Like, "The Prodigal Son," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Prodigal_Son "Journey to the West" could be considered a Buddhist allegory. Some people consider "Lord of the Rings" to contain allegory as well. Red Ridding Hood actually does contain a hidden message about the danger of interacting with strangers (especially for young girls), but it is not moral or spiritual. We would call this a folk tale more than a parable or allegory.
