-mente turns an adjective into an adverb, like -ly in English.
desafortunadamente = unfortunately

It's used to form adverbs out of adjectives. Mostly modal adverbs.
Examples:
Effectively= efectivaMENTE
Totally= totalMENTE
It means that MENTE is used as the "LY" added to adjectives in English

At the time of forming -mente adverbs, remember that the adjective must be in feminine!
afortunado > afortunada > afortunadamente
maravilloso > maravillosa > maravillosamente
