In Spanish language, how do you know when to say queciera or yo quiero?

Quisiera is a more polite way to request something. Basically it's the equivalent to saying "I would like" instead of "I want". It does get a little more nuanced than that and to be honest I'm still trying to figure out when to use which in the grayer areas.
