after = despues con un sustantivo (I will see you after the show.) "The show" es el sustantivo y por eso tienes que usar after.
then = entonces
afterwards = despues, pero sin un sustantivo. (I will see you afterwards.) Aqui, la oracion no dice lo que sustantivo vas a ver más tarde, y por eso tienes que usar afterwards.
