Is there any differences between "ten"and"tamten"?

They are usually interchangeable but not always. TAMTEN = position+article: use this when speaking about something located, TEN = article.
Lets see the difference in an example:
An idea is wonderful = Ten nápad je úžasný. You can't use TAMTEN as an idea is an abstraction which isn't located.
When using TAMTEN you are supposed to know location from earlier times.
