Is the following sentence correct?
私はよくしんぶんをよみませんが、きのうは、よみました。
"I don't often read the newspaper, but I read it yesterday."

私はあまりしんぶんをよみませんが、sounds more natural to me.
In this case, あまり=あまりよく.
