what's the difference between to compute and to calculate?

I think they are largely the same, however, I would associate compute with a machine or a computer.
"I calculate my earnings for the year"
"A computer helps me compute my earnings for the year"
"A computer helps me calculate my earnings for a year"
I probably wouldn't say "I compute my earnings for the year" though.
These aren't firm rules... just the way it's used.
