What does "making light of" mean in this context?
"You are early,"said the old woman, making light of their ( her and her husband's) obvious curiosity.
"We wondered what you were doing."
I've found the meaning of this idiom here, but it didn't help.

Some things are "serious" or "heavy". You can "make light of" these things so they do not sound serious. For example, if your car broke and you must walk somewhere, a friend might say the joke "Now you are saving the environment and doing more cardio for your health!" Your friend is making light of your problem, telling a joke to make you happy instead of sad.
