how would you understand this sentence---besides
He has got no family besides his parents.
1.Does it mean that he neigher has parents nor any other family?
* I realized that if I say he has got no family except for his parents, it means that he only has his parents. but I found in my dictionary the sentence with besides in it rather than except for, then I am confused its meaning.
2.We have no class today except for Emhlish. I cannot replace "except for" with "besides" right?
Thank you!qa

Besides and except for are completley interchangeable actually, so you can replace one with the other whenever you want to :)
