You can use "improvviso/all'improvviso". Es:
A sudden visit = una visita improvvisa (da parte di parenti). In this case you can also say "una visita improvvisata da parte di parenti" it's a colloquial form.
A sudden call = una chamata improvvisa (dalla polizia/dalla centrale di polizia)
A sudden announcment = un annuncio improvviso
A sudden pain in stomach = un dolore improvviso allo stomaco
mentre per suddenly:
Suddenly he saw his boss = all'improvviso/improvvisamente ha visto/scorto il suo capo
Suddenly the train stopped = il treno si è fermato all'improvvso/improvvisamente
