What's meaning that expression "The judge threw the book at him"?
I have seen this expression on website. Full sentence is: "Have you got the real meaning of "The judge threw the book at him", yet? Please, don't take the translate literally, unless you want to make any mistake"

The judge sentenced the defendant to a severe punishment.
The judge probably gave the maximum sentence or fine that the law books/legislation would allow.
So he didn't actually throw the book, but the punishments suggested or allowed by the book or legislation did land upon the accused person.
