The two situations I can think of seeing this construction in use are:
1) Physically driving off of something.
Examples:
"He drove off of the pavement and into the grass"
"She drove off of the ramp and onto the highway"
2) Driving away in a non-specific direction.
Examples:
"He drove off with my money! Catch him!"
"Where is Sam?" "She drove off somewhere."
Hope this helps :)
