The main use for the present simple is to talk about facts that are always true or things that happen regularly.
Water boils at 100 degrees.
My sister's a musician. She plays the violin.
This is different from the present continuous, which is used for temporary situations and things that are happening right now:
The water's boiling - I'll put the pasta in.
What's that sound? It's my sister. She's playing the violin.
