I know "tomara que" means "espero que" in the following sentence.
Tomara que você possa voltar nesta semana.
What is the literal meaning of "tomara que"?
Why plupertect tense of "tomar" is used instead of present tense?

If you know some Spanish it's exactly the same as "Ojalá" or in English "Hopefully", "I hope that".
Tomara que chova hoje. (Presente do Subjuntivo)
I hope that it rains today.(Simple Present tense)
When we talk about expectations we use "Presente do Subjuntivo" in Portuguese.
