are Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji an identical thing?

Kanji is actually Chinese hanzi used to write Japanese. But there are now significant differences between kanji used in Japanese and Chinese characters used in Chinese. Japanese people have altered the reading and meaning of kanji, and even created their own kanji (kokuji).
