My favourite author from Finland is Edith Södergran. She was a poet and wrote some truly amazing poetry during her short life. She's really interesting as a person too and kind of a tragic figure, I'm reading her biography at the moment.

I'm from Brazil. In poetry, it is João Cabral de Melo Neto. He is definitely a wordsmith, capable of endowing the most humble words of the language with immense semantic power. In prose, it has to be Machado de Assis, the nineteenth-century author who, had he written in a major language, would be on a par with Dostoievsky.
