It's hard to say without knowing your level. I would recommend Animal Farm by George Orwell. It's brief and easy to follow. It's also a classic and has been translated into many languages. There are film versions as well.

I am not sure of your level, but I would recommend some short stories by Jack London or Ernest Hemmingway. Shorter stories are easier to suggest, and both of these authors are known for using simpler language. Here is a PDF of one of Jack London's most famous short stories, called "To Build a Fire." http://americanenglish.state.gov/files/ae/resource_files/to-build-a-fire.pdf

My favorite book is Tuesdays With Morrie written by Mitch Albom. It's a book about a student reuniting with his teacher while his teacher battles a terrible disease. Before his last moments, they spend every Tuesday together. The teacher shares his advice and life lessons to the student. By learning these things, the student is able to overcome his challenges in life and rediscover happiness etc... I think there is a lot to learn in that book. Not only would you learn new vocabulary, but it gives great perspectives on life and helped make me become a better person.
