Tomatoes are native to South America. The Spaniards came across them in 16th century. When tomatoes first appeared in Britain and Russia, many people were scared. Tomatoes were thought by many people to be poisonous. They refused to eat them and grew tomatoes only as a plants for decoration. Europeans were suspicious of their bright, shiny fruit. Native versions were small, like cherry tomatoes, and most likely yellow rather than red. Tomatoes plants have yellow beautiful flowers and there can be as many as a dozen yellow flowers on a single tomato branch. At that time tomato flowers were presented by a man to a woman as a sign of affection. When a man stopped giving flowers it meant he stopped loving a woman.

It's like a sarcastic/funny way of saying that the love has gone and she doesn't love him anymore or vice versa.
