What does the word "otaku" mean in Japan? I know that most anime and manga fans refer to themselves as otakus, but I have also read that some Japanese consider the term derogatory or insulting. Is this true? Also, what is the actual translation of the word in English? Is it even a real word in Japan or just something that English-speakers have made up?

Since you only spelled it in Romaji, there are more meanings. お宅Otaku, is Your home, Your house, or your family. オタクOtaku, is like a geek. おたくOtaku it's a Japanese term used to refer to people with obs.

the term has many meanings, but i think the way you are describing it, the phrase otaku refers to someone who "has no social life" or "no love life" and usually stays in their house most of the time, so of course the anime characters would find it insulting be be called that, but when they are referring to themselves it is alright. its a bit like if i said I'm anti-social. i do not know the direct translation into English, but i hope this helps, and also, i don't think it was a term made up in English.
