Could anybody expain me the meaning of this phrase "This is where it really hit home for me"? Thanks

this is when I felt (the truth) of it.
It became real (to me).
Ex. I was watching the news about a disaster, and saw the body of a child on the street. This is where it really hit home for/to me. (ie before, the disaster was less personal)
