Regrettably, mermaids are mythical. They are not real. There are no mermaids. Like dragons and unicorns, they are legends, or made-up stories.
They are part of a old tradition from the Middle Ages (a thousand years ago). Some medieval scholars believed that every land creature had a corresponding sea creature, hence all of the names like "seahorse" and "sea lion."
There is a theory that the source of the legend might be distant sightings of real mammals: dugongs and manatees.
In the old days, in the 1800s, a famous U.S. entrepreneur, P. T. Barnum, displayed a dead, mummified "Fiji mermaid" in his "American Museum" in New York. It was a fake. It was made by sewing together parts of a monkey and a fish.
Hans Christian Andersen's fictional story, "The Little Mermaid," is sweet, sad, and beautiful, and its English translations are fairly easy English.

The nearest we have to a mermaid in the real world is the manatee.
