A few days ago I saw a very strange expression. This is a part of the sentence: "He explores the effects of the then fashionable philosophy". What's "the then"??????? Thanks in advance!! ☺️

It's strange, but not unusual. This use of 'then' as an adjective is quite common, especially in formal and semi-formal writing.
The phrase 'the then fashionable philosophy' is a neater way of saying 'the philosophy that was fashionable at that time.'
