وللتوضيح أكتر ال " ي " تكتب ياء وتنطق ياء
وال " ى " تكتب ياء وتنطف مثل الألف وتسمى ألف لينة

The short answer is, according to my understanding, the letter "ى" is pronounced as "ا"- as in: الكُبْرَى/ الأُخْرَى/ الصُّغْرَى
While " ي " is just the /yaa/ you know- as in: يكتب- طويل- يجري -افعلي
