"hip-deep in"means? I asked him excitedly, “What should I be doing now to insure that I get into your film school?” He said, “Don’t study film, whatever you do. We are hip-deep in film geeks who make films about other films. They make their films about the only reality they know. Go do something in life that is interesting and will rub your brain with many people and ideas. Then come back.” dose that means those "film geeks" are not welcomed in terms of his point of view ?

Yes, it means that there are too many film geeks. "Hip deep" comes from the image of flood waters - too much water. Another common expression is "knee deep", meaning the same thing. The speaker may have been emphasizing that there is even more by saying "hip deep"
