In a P-N-P transistor application, the solid state device is turned on when the A. base is negative with respect to the emitter. B. base is positive with respect to the emitter. C. emitter is negative with respect to the base. This is a basic electrical question. Please help me. I don't know what is the meaning of 'respect' here, and what does 'solid state device' represent in a transistor?

"with respect to" means "compared with". The question is asking if the base is at a more positive or more negative voltage than the emitter is. A transistor is a solid-state device, meaning that it consists of a solid piece of material (actually several materials joined together). This is to distinguish it from its predecessor, vacuum tubes, which were not solid.
