examples:
i1) ti vorrei mostrare una casa che penso di compare.
e1) I'd like to show you a house that I want to buy.
i2) Il nostro piccolo bambino e` molto orgoglioso di quello che ha costruito, e lo mostra a tutti.
e2) our little children is so proud of what he built and he shows it to everybody
i3) Pitagora ha dimostrato per primo un teorema legato ai triangoli rettangoli che usiamo
quasi ogni giorno.
e3) Pitagora was the first to prove a theorem related to rectangular triangles, that we use almost every day.

They can be used sometimes with the same meaning as "show", but "mostrare" is closer to "point out" while "dimostrare" closer to "prove" and of course "demonstrate".
"Mostrare" carries the basic meaning, from Latin "Monstrare"="show"
"Dimostrare" comes from Latin De-monstrare =" show from above", so "show by reasoning". It was some sort of phrasal verb, with an additional nuance of meaning, and the Italian word received that.

dimostrare dipende da una spiegazione... (dimostrazione)
per esempio dimostro una equazione matematica...
mentre mostrare non è questo...
ti mostro questo quadro...
ti faccio vedere... non devo spiegare...
